It’s darker in the mornings, colder too. It’s getting tougher and tougher to get out of your warm and cozy bed and get moving. Your tile floor is cold and that morning cup of hot coffee can’t come soon enough. It warms you to your core and all you want to do is sit and enjoy that moment and make it last a little longer or take it a step further, call in sick, and wrap back up in a warm blanket in front of a warm fire as you enjoy all the cozy comforts this season provides. I get it, I really really get it.

Our fantasy worlds are only fantasies until they’re not. Reality will hit and it won’t take long for that fantasy to become a nightmare. I don’t feel like doing much when it’s cold either but if I did what I felt like doing, I’d end up unemployed, broke, out of shape, and depressed. I’ve worked out consistently through 10 winters now, without ever missing one workout I planned on doing.

Below are 8 of my favorite winter workout tips to help you beat those blues and keep on moving, pick one or a few and hold them close as you get ready to successfully tackle those chilly winter workouts!

#1 Once you set the appointment never allow yourself to break it. Set your alarm and make a rule for yourself that you will never hit snooze. If you do it once, you’ll do it again. The only way to break that bad habit is to never allow yourself the freedom to do it, no exceptions.

#2 Reward yourself with a new pair of shoes or a piece of athletic gear you’ve been wanting. Wrap it and put it under your tree. You can only unwrap it if you’ve stuck to your plan. I like splurging on one thing, I can only unwrap it if I earned it by sticking to my plan.

#3 Avoid unrealistic goals. I don’t recommend dieting this time of year or setting aesthetic goals, instead set a goal of consistency and mindful eating. Pay attention to what you are putting in your body, be mindful of it, and just make sure the splurge is worth it for you. Remember you are going to the gym in the morning, how will this affect your workout?

#4 Take your vitamins! Make sure you are increasing your vitamin C intake. Germs and sickness run rampant this time of year and you don’t want a pesky cold to prevent you from staying active. Sometimes it only takes a minor setback to throw us off track. Plan ahead, take your vitamins, wash your hands, and stay away from sick people as much as possible.

#5 Remember what it felt like to start in the beginning. Remind yourself of why you started in the first place. Place a picture of the old you where you can see it clearly and often and remind yourself that you’re never going back to that. I know what I have the potential to be and I never allow myself to forget what it finally took for me to become comfortable and confident in my own skin.

#6 Layer! Baby it’s cold outside and that can be enough to make us want to jump right back in bed. Make sure you prepare and wear plenty of warm clothes you can easily remove in layers once you begin to warm up. Don’t allow that early morning chill to creep in and you’ll hardly even notice how cold it is.

#7 Remember working out creates endorphins. The winter blues are upon us and this is the best way to keep your head on straight so you can truly enjoy the holidays with your loved ones. Depression this time of year is real and common. Instead of focusing on your body, focus on how proud you are, how happy you are to keep moving. Endorphins are powerful and can help keep the magic of this holiday season magical!

#8 Instead of thinking about the workout, imagine the feeling of being done. There is no better feeling than a hot cup of coffee and a warm shower right after a sweaty winter workout!
